Free trivia quizzes in every category

This is the full shelf of trivia on QuizPlays, sorted into rows by topic so you can jump straight to geography, history, science, movies, sports, video games or the holidays. If you just want something to play, hit the spin button and let the wheel pick for you.

Every quiz has 10 multiple-choice questions, and every answer comes with a short explanation, so a wrong guess still teaches you something. Quizzes are marked by difficulty: Warm-up rounds use famous facts and fair wording, Classic quizzes mix easy, medium and tough questions, and Brain-busters are built to stump even regular players.

How scoring works

Each trivia quiz awards up to three stars. Quick, correct answers earn bonus points, and a run of right answers in a row adds a little extra. Brain-busters are graded on a curve, so a solid score there still earns your stars, and a 9 or 10 unlocks the Genius title.

If you like pressure, flip the Timed mode switch before you start for 15 seconds per question. If you prefer to think it through, leave it off and take as long as you need. When you finish, you get a results card to send to friends, which is the easiest way to start a friendly argument about who knows more.

Where the word trivia comes from

The word traces back to the Latin trivium, a place where three roads meet. One popular explanation is that the small talk you’d hear at a busy crossroads was ordinary, everyday stuff, which is how “trivial” came to mean unimportant. Trading trivia questions became a craze among American college students in the 1960s, and the hobby got a huge boost from Trivial Pursuit, a board game dreamed up in Montreal in December 1979 by Chris Haney and Scott Abbott.
