Movie Release Order Quiz

This movie release order quiz gives you four famous films per round and asks which came out first. You'll sort Hollywood classics, Disney and Pixar favorites, summer blockbusters and modern superhero hits by their US release year. Every film in a round comes from a different year, so trust your memory of when you first saw the trailer, or when your parents did.

Clues that date a movie

Guessing when a film came out is a fun bit of detective work. Start with the look. Black-and-white movies mostly belong to the decades before the 1960s, while hand-drawn animation dominated family films until computer animation took over in the late 1990s and 2000s. Visual effects are another giveaway: practical models and puppets suggest an older film, while huge digital worlds usually point to something newer.

Your own life is a great timeline too. Think about whether you saw a movie in theaters, on VHS, on DVD or on a streaming service, and how old you were. Sequels and franchises help as well, because the first entry in a series always comes before the rest, and remakes always follow the originals they are based on.

Keep in mind that release dates can be slippery. Some films premiere at a festival or in one city months before they open nationwide, and many reach other countries on different dates. That's why this quiz sticks to US theatrical release years and keeps every film in a round at least a year apart. Movie buffs love this kind of quiz because it sparks arguments about which classics feel older or newer than they really are.
