Making sense of dates in history

History trivia leans heavily on dates, and dates have quirks of their own. The familiar BC and AD system was introduced by a monk named Dionysius Exiguus in the year 525, and it has no year zero, so 1 BC is followed directly by AD 1. That's why century math can feel slippery. Calendars changed, too. When Britain and its American colonies switched to the Gregorian calendar in 1752, September 2 was followed by September 14. George Washington had been born on February 11, 1731, by the old reckoning, which became February 22, 1732, under the new one.

Sometimes a single object unlocks a whole era. The Rosetta Stone, found by French soldiers in Egypt in 1799, carried the same decree in three scripts, and it helped Jean-François Champollion announce his breakthrough on Egyptian hieroglyphs in 1822.

A good way to tackle history questions is to build a rough mental timeline with a few anchor events, then slot new facts around them. If you know roughly what came before and after, you can rule out answers that are a century too early or too late. Connecting people to places and causes to consequences makes the details far easier to remember than isolated numbers.
