Reading your way through literary history

Great books travel. A novel written on another continent centuries ago can still end up on an American high school reading list, and that staying power is part of what makes literature such good quiz material. The questions here span several centuries and countries, so a rough sense of when and where each book appeared goes a long way.

Technology has changed how we read, too. On July 4, 1971, Michael Hart typed the U.S. Declaration of Independence into a computer, kicking off Project Gutenberg, now the oldest digital library. It offers a huge collection of free ebooks, many of them classics old enough to be in the public domain, so plenty of the books in this quiz are just a click away.

To tackle book trivia, connect each author to a time period and a setting. Ask yourself whether a work feels like the 1800s or the 1900s, whether it's a novel or a poem, and which country it comes from. Even if you haven't read every book, you probably know more than you think from movies, classes and everyday references.
