This Super Bowl quiz covers the history and fun facts behind America's biggest night in football. You'll revisit the very first championship game, legendary quarterbacks, a famous upset, a perfect season and one of the most talked-about halftime shows ever. Whether you watch for the plays, the commercials or the snacks, it's a fun ten-question warm-up for game day.

How the Super Bowl became a national event

The Super Bowl grew out of a rivalry between two pro football leagues in the 1960s. Once they agreed to merge, they needed a game to crown a single champion, and that title game slowly turned into the biggest day on the American sports calendar. Today, Super Bowl Sunday works like an unofficial holiday, with watch parties, giant snack spreads and big-budget commercials that some fans enjoy more than the game itself.

The game is usually played at a site picked years in advance rather than at either team's home field, which is why warm-weather cities and domed stadiums host so often. That makes a few exceptions stand out. The 2014 game at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey was the first held outdoors in a cold-weather city, and in February 2021 the Tampa Bay Buccaneers became the first team to play a Super Bowl in their own stadium.

When you're answering Super Bowl trivia, think in eras. The earliest games were showdowns between the two old leagues, the 1970s and '80s brought famous dynasties, and later decades added bigger halftime productions. Placing a question in the right era often narrows down the answer fast.
