This Harry Potter quiz draws on both the books and the movies, with questions about Hogwarts life, magical sports, family homes, famous casting and a couple of details only true fans will catch. Some questions are easy wins for casual readers, while others dig into the small facts hidden in the later books. Grab your wand and see how much of the wizarding world you remember.
J.K. Rowling has said the idea for Harry Potter came to her in 1990, on a delayed train from Manchester to London, when a boy who didn't know he was a wizard simply popped into her head. She spent years building the world in notebooks before the first book appeared in Britain in 1997. Six more followed, ending in 2007, and the series grew into one of the best-loved book franchises of all time.
The films ran alongside the books, starting in 2001. The final novel was split into two movies, released in 2010 and 2011, giving the series eight films in all. Because the young cast grew up on screen over that decade, watching the movies in order is a little like flipping through a family photo album.
The books reward careful readers. Small details introduced early, like a passing name or an odd object, often turn out to matter several books later, which is why rereading is so popular with fans. A simple memory trick is to tie each book to a school year, since the seven books follow Harry from age 11 to 17, roughly one year apiece. Quizzes on the series are fun because they mix big story moments with tiny details that only the most devoted fans remember.
