The stories behind sports rules

Many of the games we love today were invented surprisingly recently, and several were born in the US. Volleyball was created in 1895 by William G. Morgan, a YMCA instructor in Holyoke, Massachusetts, who first called it Mintonette. Football's biggest game is younger still: the first Super Bowl was played on January 15, 1967, at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

Sports trivia rewards people who notice how rules and traditions travel. Games spread around the world through schools, armies and empires, and each one kept odd words and customs from its early days. That's why scoring terms in some sports can sound strange, and why the same game can have slightly different rules in different countries.

When you're unsure, think about how a sport is actually played. Picture the field or court, how many people you see lined up, and how a game is scored on TV. Big international events are also a good anchor, since their history is often tied to the places where modern sport first took off. Whether you follow the NFL, the Premier League or just the Olympics every four years, you probably know more than you think.
