This Disney movies quiz travels from the studio's earliest hand-drawn features to the Pixar favorites that defined a new generation. You'll get questions on famous voice actors, memorable sidekicks, story settings and a few Oscar milestones. It's a fun trip down memory lane for anyone who grew up quoting these films, plus a couple of deep cuts for true animation fans.

A short history of Disney animation

Walt Disney and his brother Roy founded their studio on October 16, 1923, under the name Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio. In its early years it made only short cartoons, and Mickey Mouse became a star after Steamboat Willie arrived in 1928 with synchronized sound. Feature films came later, built one hand-painted frame at a time by teams of artists who could spend years on a single movie.

The studio's fortunes rose and fell over the decades. After a quieter stretch in the 1970s and early 1980s came what fans call the Disney Renaissance, a run of hit musicals that began with The Little Mermaid in 1989 and is usually said to end with Tarzan in 1999. Meanwhile Pixar, which grew out of a computer graphics group inside Lucasfilm, was spun off with Steve Jobs's backing in 1986. Disney bought it outright in 2006, bringing both studios under one roof.

A handy way to keep the films straight is to sort them by era: the early classics, the mid-century fairy tales, the Renaissance musicals and the computer-animated age. Voice casts are another fun angle, since many big stars have taken animated roles. Once you think in eras, release years and studio milestones start to fall into place.
