Why Greek myths still matter

The ancient Greeks told stories to explain the world around them: storms, seasons, love, war and death. Those tales were passed down by poets and storytellers for centuries, and they still shape the way we talk. The word panic, for example, comes from Pan, a wild god of shepherds who was said to fill travelers with sudden fear. Echo, a nymph who could only repeat what others said, and Narcissus, a youth who fell in love with his own reflection, also live on in everyday English.

Greek mythology is perfect for trivia because the stories are so vivid. There are family feuds, jealous gods, impossible tasks and heroes with fatal flaws. Many myths are cautionary tales, warning against pride, disobedience or curiosity, which makes them easy to remember once you know the moral.

A good way to keep the cast straight is to think in generations. An older set of powerful beings came first, then the famous Olympian gods, then the mortal heroes who often had a god for a parent. Each god had a domain and a signature object or animal, so linking a name to its symbol is a great memory trick. The Romans later borrowed these myths under different names, which is where many of our planet names come from.
