A quick guide to the human body

Your body is a remarkably busy place. Your heart beats about 100,000 times a day without you giving it a thought, and trillions of cells are constantly working, repairing and replacing themselves. Much of what we know about anatomy traces back to 1543, when the Flemish physician Andreas Vesalius published a richly illustrated book based on careful dissections that corrected many old errors.

Human body trivia is fun because it's personal. Every question is about something you carry around with you, yet most of us have never seen our own bones or organs. Doctors and scientists still use Latin and Greek names for body parts, a holdover from the early days of medicine, so the labels can sound grand even when they describe something small.

A good strategy is to think about function. Ask what a part needs to do, such as support weight, pump fluid, fight germs or sense the world, and its size, shape and location will usually make sense. Organs and systems also work in teams, so knowing which system a part belongs to can help you rule out wrong answers. Keep in mind that numbers for the body are averages, and everyone varies a little.
