How to think like a geographer

Every world map you've ever seen is a compromise. Flattening a round planet onto paper means something has to stretch, and the most famous example is the projection Gerardus Mercator published in 1569. It was built to help sailors steer straight courses, but it badly inflates land near the poles. On it, Greenland can look as big as a continent that is actually about 14 times larger. Comparing countries on a globe, or with an online true-size tool, can upend a lot of assumptions.

Even the starting point of the map was once up for debate. In October 1884, delegates from 26 nations met in Washington, D.C., and recommended the meridian running through Greenwich, England, as the world's zero line of longitude. That choice still shapes time zones and GPS coordinates today.

Geography trivia gets easier when you picture the map instead of memorizing lists. Try to place each question on a mental globe: which hemisphere, which coastline, which neighbors. Mountains, rivers and borders tend to cluster in ways that make sense once you see them, so one good guess often unlocks the next.
