Fun ways to remember the presidents

The presidency has produced some of the best stories in American trivia, from oddball hobbies to surprising firsts. Part of the fun is that numbering presidents isn't as simple as it sounds. Grover Cleveland served two nonconsecutive terms, so he counts as both the 22nd and 24th president, which means the number of people who have held the office is smaller than the highest number on the list.

Geography plays a big role, too. Virginia is the birthplace of eight presidents, more than any other state, with Ohio close behind at seven. Even the first president's birthday shifted on paper when the colonies changed calendars in 1752, moving from February 11, 1731, to February 22, 1732.

To get better at president trivia, group them by era instead of trying to memorize all of them in order. Think about the founding generation, the decades before the Civil War, the Gilded Age, the 20th century's wars and the modern era. Connecting each president to a major event of his time makes the details stick, and the odd personal facts become much easier to place.
