Making sense of ancient Egypt

Ancient Egypt lasted so long that it's easy to lose track of time. Pharaohs ruled from around 3150 BC, when Upper and Lower Egypt were first unified, until Rome took over in 30 BC. That's more than 3,000 years, a longer stretch than the time between the last pharaoh and today. In fact, Cleopatra lived closer in time to the Apollo Moon landing than to the building of the Great Pyramid.

One memory trick clears up a common mix-up. The Nile flows north, so Upper Egypt is actually the southern part of the country, upstream toward the river's source, while Lower Egypt is the northern delta near the Mediterranean. Once you remember that the river runs from south to north, Egyptian geography makes much more sense.

Egypt is great quiz material because it blends archaeology, religion, science and royal drama. Historians usually group its long history into the Old, Middle and New Kingdoms, so placing a ruler in one of those eras is a smart first step. Many big U.S. museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, hold impressive Egyptian collections if you want to see the real thing up close.
