Where the word trivia came from

The word trivia has a surprisingly humble origin. In Latin it described a spot where three roads meet, and because crossroads were busy public places, the idea drifted toward ordinary, everyday matters. Trivia as a pastime took off on American college campuses in the 1960s, when students traded questions about the pop culture they grew up with. Two Columbia University graduates, Ed Goodgold and Dan Carlinsky, organized some of the first contests and published a book of questions in 1966.

The craze got a huge boost from a board game invented in Montreal on December 15, 1979, by two Canadian newspapermen, Chris Haney and Scott Abbott. Within a few years it was on game tables across North America, and bar trivia nights followed in its wake.

A general knowledge quiz rewards curiosity more than expertise. When you're unsure, eliminate the answers that feel wildly off, then look for clues in the wording of the question itself. Numbers are often easier than they seem if you can anchor them to something you already know well. And if a question stumps you, the short fact after each answer is the best part: it's how good trivia players build their mental library one surprise at a time.
