How to recognize great art

Famous paintings are easier to place than you might think once you learn to look for clues. Subject matter, color palette and brushwork often point to a specific era. Smooth, glowing surfaces and careful detail suggest older European traditions, while bold strokes, flattened shapes or dreamlike scenes usually signal the late 1800s or the 1900s.

Technology shaped art more than most people realize. In 1841, American portrait painter John Goffe Rand, born in Bedford, New Hampshire, patented a collapsible metal paint tube. Before that, many painters stored mixed paint in pig bladders that were messy and hard to reseal, so the tube made oil paint far easier to keep and carry.

You don't need to travel overseas to see world-class art. The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, founded in 1870, is one of many American museums with collections spanning thousands of years. Art makes a rewarding quiz subject because each famous work comes with a story about the artist, the era and sometimes a dramatic twist.
