Why ocean life is so fascinating

The ocean holds about 97 percent of Earth's water and covers more than 70 percent of the planet's surface. With that much room, it's no surprise that the creatures living there have evolved some wonderfully odd solutions to life underwater, from unusual senses to clever ways of finding food and staying safe.

Common names can be misleading, which makes sea life perfect for trivia. The killer whale, or orca, is actually the largest member of the dolphin family, with adult males typically reaching 20 to 26 feet (6 to 8 meters) long. Learning a few surprises like that makes the rest of the sea easier to understand.

You don't need to be a diver to explore this world. Public aquariums across the United States let you see many ocean animals in person, and coastal tide pools offer a free look at sea life when the water pulls back at low tide. The more you watch, the easier it becomes to remember who's who beneath the waves, and the more fun quizzes like this one get.
