Remembering the 1990s

The 1990s sit at a sweet spot for trivia: recent enough that many of us remember them, but far enough back to feel like history. The decade opened just after the fall of the Berlin Wall and closed with the world nervously counting down to the year 2000.

It was a big decade for space science. The Hubble Space Telescope launched aboard the space shuttle Discovery on April 24, 1990, and went on to send back some of the most famous images of the universe ever captured. On July 4, 1997, NASA's Mars Pathfinder landed on Mars, and its small rover, Sojourner, rolled across the red planet while fans back on Earth followed every move.

To get through a decade quiz, build a rough timeline in your head. Ask whether something happened early, mid or late in the decade, and use events you remember personally, like a school year or a favorite movie, as anchors. Even if you weren't around in the '90s, its inventions and headlines still shape daily life, which is what makes the decade so much fun to look back on.
