About this game

Geographers count 23 sovereign countries in North America. Three giants take up most of the land, Central America adds seven smaller nations on the narrow strip that links to South America, and the remaining 13 are island countries in the Caribbean Sea. Plenty of places on the map are not independent, which is why they are left off this list: Greenland belongs to Denmark, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands are American territories, Bermuda and the Cayman Islands are British, and Martinique and Guadeloupe are part of France.

Start with the mainland and walk south from Mexico's southern border, counting seven nations before you reach Colombia. Then tackle the Caribbean in two sweeps. The big islands of the Greater Antilles sit in a line south of Florida, and one of them is shared by two countries. After that, follow the long curve of the Lesser Antilles from near Puerto Rico down toward Venezuela, where small island nations sit close together and are easy to skip. Several of them are two-island countries joined by the word and, and three start with Saint, so give those extra thought before the clock runs out.
