How many NBA teams can you name in six minutes? This name all 30 NBA teams challenge asks you to type every franchise in the league, from the Atlanta Hawks to the Washington Wizards. Nicknames on their own count, so do full city-and-team names, and popular short forms like Sixers, Cavs and Mavs work too. Most fans fly through the big markets, then stall hunting for the last few teams in the Southwest or Northwest.

About this game

The NBA has had 30 teams since the Charlotte Bobcats joined in 2004 (they took back the Hornets name in 2014). The league splits into the Eastern and Western Conferences, and each conference has three divisions of five teams. The East has the Atlantic, Central and Southeast, and the West has the Northwest, Pacific and Southwest. Knowing that every division holds exactly five teams is your best tool, because it tells you precisely where a gap is hiding.

Go division by division and count to five each time. Two cities field two teams: Los Angeles has the Lakers and the Clippers, and New York has the Knicks in Manhattan and the Nets in Brooklyn. Only one team plays outside the United States, in Toronto. The names players most often forget belong to teams named for a state or region rather than a city, like Golden State, Indiana, Minnesota and Utah, and to smaller markets in the Northwest and Southwest. A few nicknames are leftovers from old homes, too: the Jazz started in New Orleans and the Lakers in Minneapolis, land of lakes.
