Hosting trivia night with game boxes, hives and high peaks

Every Monday our trivia night serves up three unrelated themes, about three questions on each and a wildcard, all shuffled so no single topic runs away with the round. This week pairs the games that come out of the hall closet during the holidays with the insects that keep orchards and gardens productive and the peaks that draw hikers, skiers and photographers.

Board games make perfect pub quiz material because nearly everyone has played a few, yet hardly anyone knows who invented them or how their rules came about. Honeybees reward anyone who paid attention in biology class: a single hive can hold tens of thousands of insects, each with a specific job, and their social life is far more organized than it looks from the backyard. Mountains bring geography, history and a little pop culture together, since famous summits turn up on postcards, in songs and even on theme park skylines. A handy trick for mountain questions is to picture which ranges sit near the place named, then narrow it down from there.

Pitched at Classic difficulty, this edition mixes easy openers with a couple of real stumpers. Hosting at home? Read each question twice, give teams about a minute, then reveal the explanation before moving on. Fresh themes arrive next Monday.
