Hosting trivia night with creatures, crossings and cereal

Each edition of our weekly trivia night picks three unrelated themes, asks about three questions on each and adds a wildcard, all shuffled so no team can settle into a groove. This week pairs old-school creature features with feats of engineering and the most important meal of the day, so film buffs, travelers and early risers should each get a moment to shine.

Monster movie questions are a natural fit for late October, when black-and-white horror classics turn up on TV schedules and streaming menus. Many of those films came out of the early sound era, when studios discovered that audiences loved a good scare. Bridges reward anyone who has crossed a famous span on vacation or read about how they were built, and they make great bar quiz material because so many come with a dramatic backstory. Breakfast is the friendliest round of all: almost everyone has an opinion about pancakes versus waffles, and the history behind everyday morning foods is often stranger than you would guess.

Pitched at Classic difficulty, this round mixes a few gimmes with some head-scratchers. If you're hosting at home, read each question twice, allow about a minute, then share the explanation before moving on. Come back next Monday for three brand-new themes.
