How to host this week's trivia night

Each edition of our weekly trivia night picks three unrelated themes, asks about three questions on each and adds a wildcard, all shuffled so nobody can settle into a groove. This week mixes earth science, lunch counters and the shadowy world of espionage, which means geology fans, foodies and history buffs should each get a turn to lead the table.

Mixed themes are the secret behind a good bar quiz. A team stacked with one kind of expert will hit a wall sooner or later, so the best squads blend people who read different sections of the newspaper. The wildcard is there to reward whoever pays attention to odd details, and it often decides close games. Pitched at Classic difficulty, this round has a few easy points, several that take some thought and a couple meant to separate the strongest teams.

If you're hosting at home, read each question twice, give players about a minute and then share the explanation before moving on, since the bonus facts are half the fun. Keep a running score so latecomers can jump in, and come back next week for three new themes.
