Higher or Lower: Mountain Heights

  • Higher or Lower
  • Keep your streak alive
  • Endless rounds

From Himalayan giants to peaks you can drive up on a summer weekend, this higher or lower mountain height game asks you to pick the taller of two famous mountains. Elevations are measured in feet above sea level, with meters alongside. Mount Everest is the obvious king, but can you rank Denali, Kilimanjaro, the Matterhorn and Mount Whitney?

About this game

A mountain's elevation is the height of its summit above sea level, which is different from how tall it looks from its base. Mauna Kea in Hawaii, for example, rises more than 33,000 feet from the ocean floor but only about 13,800 feet above the sea. The figures here are the widely accepted elevations used by national surveys and major references, including the 2020 China-Nepal survey that set Everest at 29,032 feet.

Each round shows one mountain's elevation and hides the other. Decide whether the hidden peak is higher or lower, then see the real number. A correct guess makes that mountain your new anchor and grows your streak, while one wrong answer ends the game. The list mixes the world's 8,000-meter peaks, the Seven Summits, volcanoes and favorite US landmarks, so expect a few close calls.
