Higher or Lower: Country Sizes

  • Higher or Lower
  • Keep your streak alive
  • Endless rounds

Flat world maps play tricks on your eyes, and this higher or lower country size game is here to prove it. You will see two countries and pick the one with the larger total area in square miles. Russia and Canada are easy calls, but Greenland-style distortion makes matchups like Algeria versus Mexico or Iran versus Peru surprisingly tough.

About this game

A country's total area includes its land plus inland water such as lakes and rivers. Figures here come from one consistent compilation drawn from the UN Statistics Division and the CIA World Factbook, and we left out countries whose borders or official areas are widely disputed so every answer is clear-cut. Russia is the giant at about 6.6 million square miles, roughly 1.7 times the size of second-place Canada.

Each round shows one country's area and hides the second. Decide whether the hidden country is higher or lower, then check the real number in square miles and square kilometers. A right answer slides the new country into the anchor spot and keeps your streak alive, but one miss ends the run. Watch out for countries near the poles, which common maps stretch, and for African nations, which are usually bigger than they look.
