Australian history for American readers

Australia's story runs far deeper than its modern nation. Aboriginal peoples have lived on the continent for at least 50,000 years, and some evidence points to 65,000 years or more. The land itself is vast, with an area roughly equal to the lower 48 states, which helps explain why distance and isolation shaped so much of its history.

Americans may find more shared history than they expect. Gold was discovered in Victoria in 1851, only a few years after California's famous rush began. Australia also pioneered the secret ballot in 1856, and when U.S. states started copying the idea in the late 1880s, with Massachusetts adopting it statewide in 1888, Americans called it the Australian ballot.

When you approach this quiz, think in eras: tens of thousands of years of Aboriginal history, the colonial period, federation, and the long push for Indigenous rights in the 20th century. Placing each question in its era makes the answer choices much easier to sort. It's a rewarding subject because so many of its turning points are still discussed in Australia today.
