Which of Santa's Reindeer Are You?

Where Santa's reindeer came from

Santa's sleigh team, as most Americans know it, comes largely from a single poem. "A Visit from St. Nicholas," often called "The Night Before Christmas," first appeared anonymously in a Troy, New York, newspaper on December 23, 1823, and it was the first work to give the reindeer names. A couple of those names have shifted over the years: the original Dunder and Blixem, Dutch words for thunder and lightning, gradually became Donner and Blitzen.

Real reindeer are just as interesting. They belong to the same species as North America's caribou, and they're the only deer in which both males and females grow antlers. Those antlers fall off and grow back every year, and in the far north, people have herded reindeer for centuries for milk, meat and transportation.

Here's how this quiz works. Each of the seven questions has four answers, and every answer nudges you toward one member of the sleigh team. There are no wrong choices, so pick what feels most like you rather than what sounds most festive. It's just for fun, not a psychological test, so share your result and see who in your family would fly beside you on Christmas Eve.
