Where superheroes came from

The American superhero took off in the late 1930s, when cheap comic books sold on newsstands and kids traded them by the stack. That burst of creativity, later called the Golden Age of comics, set the rules the genre still follows: a colorful costume, a code name, extraordinary powers or skills, and very often a secret identity that lets the hero walk among ordinary people.

After a slump in the 1950s, a Silver Age revival in the late 1950s and 1960s gave heroes more human problems, like paying rent, arguing with teammates and doubting themselves. Writers also leaned on the science buzzwords of the day, so lab mishaps, mysterious experiments and space-age gadgets became favorite ways to hand out powers.

For trivia purposes, it helps to remember that every hero has three layers worth knowing: the person behind the mask, the event that changed everything, and the writers and artists who invented them. Movies and TV shows sometimes tweak these details, so quiz questions about origins usually point back to the original comics. Independent publishers have created plenty of beloved characters too, so the big two are not the whole story.
