Why '90s music still fills the dance floor

The 1990s were the golden age of the compact disc. Fans who had grown up with vinyl and cassettes replaced their collections on CD, record stores boomed and albums sold in numbers the industry has rarely matched since. Late in the decade, file-sharing service Napster arrived in 1999 and hinted at the streaming world to come.

Musically, the decade splintered into scenes that all thrived at once. Alternative rock pushed hair metal off the radio, hip-hop and R&B moved to the center of pop culture, teen pop came roaring back near the end of the decade and dance tracks crossed over from clubs to wedding receptions. Country, ska and Latin pop all had their own crossover moments too.

That variety makes '90s music a gift for trivia night. Every team usually has someone who lived through it on MTV and someone who discovered it later through movies, TV reboots or a parent's playlist. A good strategy is to place a song by its sound: distorted guitars, glossy harmonies and sampled beats each point to a different corner of the decade.
