What makes rock "classic"

Classic rock started out as a radio format rather than a genre. In the early 1980s, FM stations began building playlists around the guitar-heavy albums of the late 1960s and 1970s, and the label stuck. Today the term covers everything from the British Invasion to arena rock, Southern rock, hard rock and the singer-songwriters who filled stadiums in that era.

Those years were the heyday of the album. FM disc jockeys played long tracks that AM radio would never touch, so bands treated records as complete works, with gatefold sleeves, concept stories and cover art that fans studied for hours. That is why classic rock trivia leans so heavily on album titles and band lore instead of just singles.

When you get stuck, think about where a band came from. American groups often grew out of local scenes in places like Los Angeles, San Francisco and the South, while British bands tended to come out of art schools and blues clubs in and around London. Album covers are another great clue, since the era produced some of the most recognizable artwork in music history.
