Choosing an Australian city, explained for Americans

Australia is huge. At about 2.97 million square miles (7.69 million km²), it is nearly the size of the lower 48 states, yet most of its people live in a handful of cities. Roughly 95 percent of Australians live within about 62 miles (100 km) of the coast, so city life and beach life are closely tied. Seasons are flipped compared with the US, which means a Christmas barbecue in the sun is perfectly normal.

Because the country covers so much ground, its major cities feel very different from one another. They vary in climate, pace, size, food scenes and how close you are to wilderness, a bit like comparing living in Boston, Miami and Denver. Locals love a good-natured rivalry about which city is best, and visitors usually leave with a firm favorite.

This quiz asks about your ideal Saturday, commute, climate, home and night out. Each answer leans toward one of four cities, and the city that collects the most of your answers is your match. There are no wrong choices, and it's meant purely for fun rather than as relocation advice or a personality test, so dream a little and see where you'd land.
