America's national parks, briefly

The United States pioneered the national park idea. President Ulysses S. Grant signed the first national park into law on March 1, 1872, and it is widely regarded as the first national park anywhere in the world. Congress created the National Park Service in 1916 to look after the growing collection, which now stretches from Alaska to the Caribbean and draws millions of visitors every year.

Each park has a distinct character. Landscapes range from deserts and glaciers to swamps, canyons, coral reefs and forests, and each park has its own wildlife, weather and pace. The way people choose to visit says a lot about them too, whether they want a tough summit day, a cozy cabin, quiet wildlife watching or a spontaneous detour.

This quiz asks about your ideal trail, camping style, favorite time of day, road trip habits and the animal you'd most like to spot. Each answer leans toward one of four famous parks, and the park you pick most often is your match. There are no wrong answers, and it's meant for fun rather than as a personality test, so answer honestly and maybe start planning your next trip.
