The idea that birth order shapes personality goes back to the early 1900s, when Austrian psychiatrist Alfred Adler suggested that a child's place in the family could influence how they see the world. The theory stuck around in pop culture, and today almost everyone has a hunch about how their spot in the family shaped them, or how it explains their siblings.
The science is much less certain. A large 2015 study of more than 20,000 people in the US, Britain and Germany found that birth order had no meaningful effect on core personality traits such as how outgoing, agreeable or conscientious people are. That's exactly why this quiz is a playful guess rather than a test. Each of the seven questions has four answers, and each answer quietly leans toward one of four family roles.
